Who Is NOT a Good Candidate for ARTAS Hair Transplants?Herbert Feinberg
Your hair is one of the most visible indicators of your age. Unfortunately, millions of men and women are all-too-familiar with age-related hair loss and can feel without options as their hairline gradually moves backward and their bald spot continues to grow. While an ever-increasing amount of anti-aging treatments exists to keep wrinkles at bay, what can be done about your thinning head of hair?
At The New Jersey Hair Transplant Center, Dr. Herbert Feinberg is here to help you look as young as you feel by restoring your thinning hair. With a variety of hair restoration options, including the advanced ARTAS 9x hair restoration system, Dr. Feinberg can provide the treatment you need to overcome your hair loss and enjoy thick, natural hair once again.
How ARTAS Hair Restoration Works
The ARTAS 9x hair restoration system automates portions of the follicular unit excision (FUE) procedure to make hair transplants more precise than ever before. FUE has become the gold standard in recent years for minimally invasive and natural hair restoration, outperforming traditional strip removal surgery, also known as follicular unit transplantation (FUT).
Rather than remove a section of your scalp to provide donor follicular grafts like FUT does, FUE focuses on removing individual follicular units using a punch device. Individual graft removal requires a more painstaking process but creates superior results and a quicker recovery. Rather than creating a linear scar like strip removal, FUE creates barely visible, faint circular scarring that allows patients to still wear their as hair short as they’d like. By avoiding strip removal, FUE also does not require a lengthy and painful recovery.
The ARTAS 9x system automates crucial parts of the FUE procedure to provide robotically-precise results and limit the potential for human error. During the procedure, the ARTAS 9x uses an onboard camera to scan the back of your scalp and choose only the most optimal grafts for harvesting. Dr. Feinberg can then implant the grafts individually in the balding sections of your scalp to effectively rebuild your hairline.
Most patients who make good candidates for traditional manual hair transplantation surgery also make good candidates for ARTAS 9x hair restoration. Read on to find out if who is not a good candidate for ARTAS 9x hair restoration.
1. Patients with Non-Age-Related Hair Loss
Age-related hair loss is the result of a specific type of hair loss called androgenetic alopecia. Most patients are familiar with the terms “male pattern baldness” or “female pattern baldness,” which refer to androgenetic alopecia and the predictable patterns it forms as it progresses throughout the scalp. Androgenetic alopecia is the result of factors inherent in your genes and typically manifests later in life, although some patients may notice symptoms as early as their 20s.
If you have started to lose your hair as the result of a different type of hair loss, then ARTAS 9x hair restoration is not for you. Other types of hair loss may be caused by pregnancy (post-partum alopecia), excessive force on the roots (traction alopecia), an autoimmune disease (alopecia areata) or nutritional deficiencies. Schedule a consultation with a hair loss expert to evaluate your thinning hair and determine if hair transplants are right for you.
2. Patients Under the Age of 30
While there’s no strict age cutoff for undergoing hair transplantation surgery with or without the ARTAS system, patients under the age of 30 are generally not good candidates for the procedure. While some men and women may experience hair loss earlier than others, prospective hair transplant patients need to wait for their hair loss to establish a predictable pattern before moving forward with the procedure. If hair transplantation surgery is completed too soon, patients run the risk of losing their new transplants if the follicles turn out to be unhealthy and become affected by hair loss.
If your hair has begun to thin out early on, schedule a consultation with a hair loss expert to make plans for transplants later in life. In the meantime, other hair loss solutions can be used to manage your hair loss and provide better results once you are ready to receive hair transplants.
3. Patients with Thin Hair in Their Donor Sites
The ARTAS 9x hair restoration system removes donor follicular units from the back of the scalp. Follicular units located along the back and sides of the scalp are much more resistant to the ongoing progression of hair loss and make for the strongest hair transplants. If your hair has thinned considerably in the back of your head or you have previously undergone hair transplant procedures that have left your hair sparse in that area, you may not be a good candidate for ARTAS 9x hair transplants.
4. Patients with Unrealistic Expectations
Hair transplants will not completely restore your hair to how it looked when you were a teenager. Hair transplantation surgery simply takes existing hair from dense, healthy areas of your scalp and spreads it across areas that have thinned out or gone bald over the years. The total number of follicular units you have in your scalp will not change, so don’t expect to suddenly have incredibly thick and dense hair again if you’ve been going bald for 15 years.
While hair transplants can provide life-changing results, especially with the ARTAS 9x system, they also require some time and plenty of patience. Following surgery, you may not begin noticing visible results for several months. Most patients do not experience optimal results until around nine months after their procedure. Your final results will take about 12 to 18 months to develop, although the results will certainly be worth the wait.
5. Patients Who Want a Hair Loss Cure
Once you have received your transplants and undergone your procedure, the work does not stop there. Hair transplantation surgery is not a curative procedure, meaning it will not actively work to stop or cure your age-related hair loss. If you receive hair transplants but neglect to actually put in the work to maintain your hair, your results may not last as long as you would hope. In order to truly enjoy your hair transplants well into the future, plan on adopting a comprehensive hair restoration plan that incorporates products like Rogaine and Propecia, as well as advanced treatments like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.
